Website Development Guide for Indian Businesses

Building a business website in India comes with a few practical considerations that don’t always show up in generic "how to build a website" guides. Here’s a starting checklist.

Get the basics locked down first

A registered domain name matching your business name, a professional email address on that domain (not a free webmail address), and reliable hosting are the non-negotiable starting points before anything else is worth discussing.

Design for mobile first, not as an afterthought

Mobile traffic makes up the majority of web visits for most Indian businesses, especially local and service-based ones. A site that’s designed mobile-first — not just "responsive" as an afterthought — tends to convert noticeably better than a desktop design that’s squeezed to fit a phone screen.

Local payment integration, if you sell online

If the site involves any kind of payment — bookings, deposits, e-commerce — integrating a gateway like Razorpay that supports common Indian payment methods (UPI, cards, net banking) directly affects how many visitors actually complete a purchase versus abandoning at checkout.

WhatsApp is not optional in most industries

For a large share of Indian consumers, WhatsApp is a primary channel for business inquiries. A visible, working click-to-WhatsApp option alongside your contact form and phone number often converts inquiries that a form alone would lose.

Plan for maintenance from day one

A website is not a one-time expense — security updates, content changes and small fixes come up regularly after launch. Deciding upfront who handles this (and what it costs) avoids the common situation where a site quietly goes stale within a year of launch.
